The ultimate Nevada road trip

Although an enormous slot machine win might have you believing otherwise, there’s a heckuva lot more to Nevada than the city of Las Vegas. The Silver State is chock full of untapped treasures including alien beef jerky, forgotten ghost towns, snow-capped mountains, lonely highways, stunning National Parks and Old West saloons. In celebration of the 36th U.S. state, Orbitz has teamed up with the Nevada Division of Tourism to launch its latest “Orbitz Originals” video series, entitled “Nevada: Stories from the Road.” The five-part online video series, which is hosted by award-winning travel expert Richard Bangs, leaves Sin City in the dust and hits the backroads for an unforgettable highway adventure. Day 1: Richard Bangs leaves the brights lights and big city of Las Vegas and begins his journey up the Extraterrestrial Highway in search of alien beef jerky, Area 51, the forgotten town of Caliente and gorgeous Cathedral Gorge State Park.

Day 2: Bangs continues his journey through the Silver State with a visit to Pioche, a Wild West town that was once even more dangerous than Tombstone.

Day 3: Bangs visits Great Basin National Park, home to off-the-beaten path hiking trails and caves. Afterward, he hits the town of McGill and swings by the McGill Historic Drugstore Museum, a drugstore that closed in 1979 but still has a working soda fountain, a terra cotta bar from 1930 and shelves full vintage products.

Day 4: It’s onward to Eureka, “the loneliest town on the loneliest road in America,” and a place that still epitomizes the western lifestyle. From here, Bangs checks out the Owl Bar and Restaurant whose claim to fame is that it’s the “best bar in the middle of nowhere.”

Day 5: The journey winds down in Reno, “The Biggest Little City in the World,” but not without a visit to one of the smallest castles in the world, a tree draped in shoes, and a visit to Middlegate Station, home to just 17 people and the famous Monster Burger.
