Haiti earthquake: U.S. urges citizens to avoid travel

The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert for Haiti in the wake of Tuesday’s earthquake.

The alert, in effect until March 13, urges citizens to avoid travel to Haiti.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake near Haiti’s capital, Port Au Prince, has left widespread damage throughout the country. Preliminary reports indicate that electricity and phone service is out in many areas, countless buildings, including some hospitals, have collapsed, and many people remain missing.

Several airlines have relaxed their reticketing policies for travelers who had planned flights to Haiti and wish to change their tickets.
